Rwanda: 6-Day Gorilla and Golden Monkey Tracking, Big 5 Tour
Wild primates and classic safari animals share one trip. This Rwanda adventure links Volcanoes National Park with Akagera National Park, giving you two very different sides of the country in one carefully packed journey. You track golden monkeys, spend time with mountain gorillas, visit cultural centers, cruise Lake Ihema, and search for lions, elephants, hippos, and other wildlife.
I like the way the trip combines Rwanda’s strongest natural attractions rather than asking you to choose between gorilla trekking and safari. I also like the small group size, limited to six people, which should make transfers and wildlife viewing more manageable. The main drawback is the price: at $4,609 per person, this is a major investment, and the schedule includes several long road transfers.
You should also note the timing description. The program runs from Day One through Day Six and includes five nights, while the activity details call it a five-day experience. In practical terms, plan on six calendar days, with the final day ending in Kigali or at the airport.

Five things to know before you book
![]()
- Two primate treks require different effort levels: Golden monkey tracking is usually one to two hours, while gorilla tracking can take two to six hours.
- The gorilla permit is included: Park fees and animal-tracking permits are covered in the price, which removes one of the largest extra costs of a Rwanda gorilla trip.
- Akagera adds a second wildlife style: You move from forest trekking to open-vehicle game drives and a boat trip on Lake Ihema.
- The group is capped at six: A small group matters on narrow forest paths, in the safari vehicle, and during long transfers.
- The itinerary is physically demanding: You need a good level of fitness and should be comfortable walking for several hours.
- Cultural visits are built into the route: Kigali, the Ib’yIwacu Cultural Village, Red Rocks Intercultural Exchange Center, and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund add context beyond animal sightings.
What the $4,609 price really covers
![]()
At $4,609 per person, this is not a budget wildlife holiday. It is priced as a high-cost, permit-heavy safari, and the value depends largely on how much you want gorilla tracking to be part of your Rwanda visit.
The price includes five nights of full-board accommodation, a 4×4 safari vehicle, drinking water, a guide, park fees, and animal-tracking permits. The gorilla permit alone is a major part of the cost of this kind of trip, so having it included makes the total easier to understand. You are also paying for the private planning of a route that would be difficult to organize efficiently on your own.
International flights, drinks, and visa fees are not included. Those costs can add up, especially if you want bottled drinks, alcoholic beverages, or extra time in Rwanda before or after the program.
I see the strongest value in the range of experiences. You are not spending five nights in one lodge and repeating the same type of outing. You get Kigali, cultural activities, two primate encounters, a safari, and a boat ride. The trade-off is that several days begin early and involve long drives, so you are paying for variety as much as for relaxation.

Day One: Kigali, local culture, and the road to Musanze
![]()
The trip starts with pickup at your accommodation in Kigali. You visit the city’s craft market and the Kigali Genocide Memorial Site before heading north toward Musanze.
The memorial visit is an important part of understanding modern Rwanda. It gives the rest of the journey a human and historical frame, especially as you move through a country that has placed strong emphasis on rebuilding and national identity. The craft market adds a lighter introduction to local creative work.
The drive to Musanze is not just a transfer. The route brings you to the foothills of the Virunga volcanoes, where the next two days of primate tracking take place. You should still expect a substantial amount of time in the vehicle, so wear comfortable clothes and keep water, a jacket, and any medication within reach.
At the Ib’yIwacu Cultural Village, you learn about Rwanda’s pre-colonial life through demonstrations and activities. You can try archery, see how local food is prepared, learn about traditional medicines, and take part in a role-playing activity as king or queen for the day.
This stop gives you something hands-on rather than a quick photo stop. It is especially useful if you want cultural contact included in a wildlife itinerary. The visit is structured, though, so you should approach it as an educational cultural presentation rather than an unplanned village encounter.
You spend the night at Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge. Because the following morning begins with golden monkey tracking, keep your hiking shoes and jacket ready instead of burying them in your luggage.
Day Two: Golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park
![]()
After breakfast, you report to the park headquarters for a briefing before entering Volcanoes National Park. Golden monkey tracking is generally the gentler of the two forest outings, with a typical walking time of one to two hours.
That shorter trek makes a useful first introduction to the park. You get a chance to adjust to the forest, the walking pace, and the basic rules for approaching endangered primates before the longer gorilla outing. Even so, easy is relative. A good level of fitness is still required, and forest paths can demand steady footing.
After the trek, you return to Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge for lunch. The afternoon visit to the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund focuses on gorilla conservation and scientific research.
This is one of the trip’s most valuable educational stops. The gorilla encounter itself is brief, with a maximum of one hour allowed near the animals. Learning about the work behind habitat protection and research helps you understand why the visit is carefully controlled and why the permits cost so much.
You spend a second night at the same lodge, which is practical. There is no need to repack for a new hotel, and you can prepare your clothing and daypack for the early start ahead.
Day Three: The long, rewarding gorilla trek
![]()
Gorilla tracking is the centerpiece of the trip. You have an early breakfast, take a packed lunch, and report to park headquarters for a briefing on the code of conduct before entering the forest.
The trek may take two to six hours, depending on where the gorillas have moved. That wide range matters. You should not treat this as a fixed morning walk with a predictable finish time. Bring patience, water, a jacket, insect repellent, and hiking shoes with good support.
Once you find the gorillas, your time with them is limited to one hour. That restriction can feel short after several hours of walking, but it protects the animals and keeps human contact controlled. The limited time also makes it worth putting your phone away for at least part of the encounter. Watch the group’s behavior, listen to the forest, and let the moment unfold without trying to record every second.
This is the most physically demanding day, and it may also be the least predictable. The gorillas decide where the walking goes, not the clock. If you have back problems, limited mobility, or difficulty walking for extended periods, this itinerary is not a good fit. It is also not suitable for children under 15, pregnant women, or people who are not accustomed to walking.
You return to Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge for the night. The schedule does not include a separate recovery day, so consider adding extra time in Rwanda if you want to rest after the trek.

Day Four: From Musanze through Kigali to Akagera
![]()
You leave Musanze early and travel through Kigali toward Akagera National Park. This is the longest-feeling transition in the itinerary because you move from the volcanic north to the eastern part of Rwanda.
The day is mainly about reaching the next park, so do not expect a major wildlife outing along the way. A 4×4 safari vehicle and a driver-guide are included, which should make the transfer more useful than a basic point-to-point ride. You can ask questions about the changing scenery and prepare for the very different terrain and wildlife experience ahead.
You spend the night at Akagera Game Lodge. This overnight stop is well placed because the following day begins with an early game drive. Have your camera, jacket, and insect repellent ready before breakfast.
Day Five: Akagera game drive and Lake Ihema cruise
Akagera changes the pace completely. Instead of walking through forest in search of a small primate group, you ride in an open-top vehicle and scan a broad area for larger animals.
The half-day game drive may produce sightings of elephants, buffaloes, hippos, lions, Masai giraffes, gazelles, impalas, baboons, oribi, Burchell’s zebras, topis, bush babies, leopards, and bushbuck. Wildlife is never a guaranteed checklist, but the range of species gives the drive plenty of possibility.
The mention of the Big 5 is useful, but you should keep expectations realistic. The itinerary offers the chance to see elephants, buffaloes, lions, and leopards, while the fifth Big 5 animal, the rhinoceros, is not specifically listed among the expected sightings. You may see several of the famous animals, but no safari can promise all five on one outing.
After lunch, you take a boat ride on Lake Ihema. This adds a close water-level view that a vehicle drive cannot provide. Crocodiles and hippos are the main attractions along the banks, while the lake and surrounding wetlands support a large bird population.
More than 525 bird species are associated with the park, including migratory and savanna birds. You might see unusual species such as shoebill storks and papyrus gonoleks, along with jacanas, ibises, sandpipers, and herons. If you enjoy birdwatching, bring binoculars and allow yourself to focus on smaller sightings instead of only searching for large mammals.
You return to Akagera Game Lodge for dinner and another night. The combination of game drive and boat ride makes this the fullest wildlife day outside Volcanoes National Park.
Day Six: One last game drive before Kigali
![]()
The final morning begins with breakfast and a morning game drive before the return to Kigali. This gives you one last chance to spot animals that were quiet or out of view during the previous day.
The drive also adds a little flexibility to the wildlife experience. Animals do not follow an itinerary, so a second outing can change what you see. Still, you should check your flight time carefully. The program ends with drop-off at your Kigali lodge for check-in or at the airport for departure, and the exact length of the final transfer will depend on the route and game-drive timing.
If you are flying out that day, keep your departure plans sensible and confirm the timing with the operator before booking your flight. The itinerary includes a morning game drive, not simply a direct airport transfer.
Small group size, transport, and daily comfort
![]()
A group limited to six participants is a real advantage here. You spend many hours together in the vehicle, and a smaller group makes it easier to manage luggage, meal stops, park briefings, and wildlife viewing.
The 4×4 vehicle is important because the trip includes rougher park roads and long intercity transfers. You should still expect bumpy sections and limited personal space on driving days. Full-board accommodation helps keep the schedule simple, but drinks are extra, so budget for those separately.
English is the stated tour language, and a live guide accompanies the group. No individual guide name is provided, so if you have specific interests such as birds, conservation, photography, or cultural history, tell the operator before departure.
Bring a passport or ID card, a jacket, hiking shoes, and insect repellent. A small daypack is also practical for the forest treks, though it is not specifically listed among the required items. Pets are not allowed.
The activity offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start and a reserve-now, pay-later option. Those policies are helpful when your Rwanda plans are still changing, but they do not reduce the need to confirm visa rules, flights, and health preparations separately.
Who should book this Rwanda safari?
I would recommend this trip to you if you want Rwanda’s main wildlife experiences in one organized route and you are comfortable with early starts, long drives, and uncertain trekking times.
It suits active adults who want a serious gorilla encounter rather than a relaxed lodge holiday. It also works well for someone who wants cultural stops and conservation education included instead of treating the parks as isolated attractions.
I would look elsewhere if you want a slow itinerary, private time at each lodge, or a trip built around luxury accommodation. The program packs a great deal into six calendar days, and the value comes from the number of major experiences rather than from long periods of rest.
Should you book it?
Book this tour if gorilla tracking is your priority and you also want a real safari without arranging separate permits, vehicles, lodges, and park transfers. The included gorilla and animal-tracking permits, full-board lodging, guide, and 4×4 transport make the high price easier to justify.
Skip it if the $4,609 cost strains your budget, if you cannot comfortably walk for several hours, or if you want guaranteed Big 5 sightings. For the right person, though, this is a strong way to connect Rwanda’s forest primates, conservation work, culture, and savanna wildlife in one compact trip.
